2008 Reunion Gala in October
Annual Fall Reunion for Classes Ending in "3" and "8"
 The law school's annual fall reunion will bring together members of all classes ending in "3" and "8". The celebration will begin at 6:30 p.m. with a hosted cocktail hour, followed by dinner, live music, and dancing at the J.W. Marriott in San Francisco. Alumni may see who else is coming, register online, join class committees, and submit memories here.

Hon. Mary E. Wiss ’72, appointed to the San Francisco County Superior Court by former Gov. Gray Davis, was elected president of the Judges Association in June. James G. Butler Jr. ’87, a trial team leader with The Veen Firm, was appointed to the Board of Governors for the Consumer Attorneys of California. Alesia P. Jones ’91 was appointed to a Solano County Superior Court judgeship by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger in July. Gregory Lippetz ’91 has joined Jones Day as a partner in the Palo Alto office, where he will focus on intellectual property litigation. David Barch ’03 has joined Foley & Mansfield in San Francisco as an associate in its toxic tort and mass litigation group.

The USF School of Law is gearing up for another exciting year. A new class of approximately 240 first-year law students — chosen from nearly 4,200 applicants—will fill Kendrick Hall in the coming weeks. Many of our continuing students are returning from innovative summer programs and internships in such diverse locales as Bangalore, India; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic; and throughout the Southern United States. In addition, many students attended our summer study offerings in Dublin, Prague, and Budapest.

While we welcome our students back and look with anticipation toward the new year, we also remember the legacy of Art Zief ’47, who died July 25 and whose unparalleled support transformed the law school. Art had an unswerving and inspiring belief in how good we are and the potential that we have. As we honor his memory we redouble our efforts to educate skilled, ethical professionals who will help fashion a more humane and just world. That’s exactly what Art would have wanted.

Human Rights Contributions Honor Frances B. Newman
JeffDonations are being made to the Frank C. Newman International Human Rights Clinic at the USF School of Law in honor of Frances Burks Newman, who passed away in Walnut Creek June 11. Frannie, as she was known to her friends, was the widow of Frank C. Newman, associate justice (retired) of the California Supreme Court, dean and professor emeritus at the University of California School of Law at Berkeley, and co-founder of Human Rights Advocates (HRA).
